Man Utd’s Nemanja Vidić keen to resurrect Rio Ferdinand partnership
Manchester United captain Nemanja Vidić is confident he can resurrect his partnership with Rio Ferdinand this season
Nemanja Vidić is convinced he can resurrect his partnership with Rio Ferdinand and the pair can become the “best” central defenders in the Premier League next season.
The Red Devils captain is edging towards his competitive return for the 19-time English champions after suffering a season-ending knee injury last December.
The 30-year-old has forged a successful partnership with Ferdinand since joining the club in 2006, winning four Premier League titles and the Champions League, and Vidić is desperate to replicate their previous success next term.
“I have no doubt Rio and me can again be the best couple of central defenders in the Premier League,” Vidić told ESPN.
“That’s the way it has been for a few years and now my dream is for us to return to the same level.
“People can think anything they like. But, all things being equal, it is very difficult for anybody to get the better of us.
“My knee is in perfect condition. My only challenge this season is to avoid more injury. I’m still not 100 per cent, but this will come with more minutes on the field and more hard work.
“I’ve received a lot of confidence from the manager and this is the main thing for me.”
Chris Smalling, Jonny Evans and Phil Jones were all regular starters for Sir Alex Ferguson last season in the absence of the Serbia international, and Vidić believes the trio will have learned a lot following a fruitless campaign.
“We had some young players play a lot of games last season,” he added.
“They’ll have learned a lot. We all learned. In Europe we’ve had so much success in recent years and maybe relaxed a bit. We were punished and can’t allow that to happen again.”
