Luka Modrić is poised to finally complete his move to Real Madrid after Tottenham reached an agreement with the La Liga champions for the transfer of the playmaker.

The 26-year-old scored 17 goals in 160 appearances for Spurs but has been heavily linked with a move to the Bernabéu all summer.

The news sparked an inevitable reaction on Twitter. Here are some of the Tweets that caught out eye.

Tottenham legend Gary Lineker (‏@GaryLineker) can’t quite figure out the ‘partnership’ concept: “Interesting partnership between Real Madrid and Spurs! Not sure how that will work… Manager swap maybe!”

Charles Higgs (‏@cedhiggs) believes Modrić was one of the Premier League’s best players: “Goodbye Luka Modrić. One of the best players in the Premier League hands down. Shame it ended like it did. Club partnership is a good deal. #levy #thfc”

While Syafiq Syazlee ‏(@KuroReishin) reckons Modrić is overpriced: “Real Madrid agree fee for Luka Modrić transfer worth €37m from Tottenham. I seriously think he is overpriced.”

Aran Sohal ‏(@AranSohal) heaps praise on Spurs chairman Daniel Levy: “Daniel Levy’s played a blinder by not only getting what he wanted for Modrić, but by having Real Madrid on board as an official partner.”

And Dale Nichols (‏@NicholsDale) prefers Spurs’ agreement to the one Arsenal supposedly have with their rivals: “Spurs agree partnership with Real Madrid …. it could be worse, we could be Arsenal and sell to every top Premier League club! #lovespurs”

However, Nashi-Reema (‏@AmeerIhsanQures) shows more foresight: “Tottenham and Real Madrid announce new ‘partnership agreement’ between clubs. Could this be a sneaky deal by Madrid so they can buy Bale??”

But Timothy Leesam ‏(@Timleesam) is critical of the Tottenham chairman: “Oh Daniel Levy, what part of letting Modrić go for £10m less than last year and becoming a feeder club to Real was good business?”

Angelo Christoforou ‏(@christo4rou) questions why Spurs don’t consider Madrid to be rivals: “Daniel Levy thinks he made a good deal not selling to a rival…the fact he doesn’t consider Madrid to be a rival speaks volumes #smallclub #thfc!”

Real Madrid fan Bianca Vinoya (@veenoyeah) doesn’t believe the La Liga champions need Modrić: “Am I the only one who thinks Luka Modrić is completely unnecessary……? #realmadrid”

Spurs supporter Tom Cox (‏@TomCox_94) wants a new midfielder to arrive at White Hart Lane: “Now Levy needs to prove himself, André Villas Boas’s been begging for João Moutinho all summer, now stump up the cash and make it happen Daniel! #THFC #COYS”

Finally, Uncle Norman Giller (‏@NormanGiller) will be more disappointed to see Michael Dawson leave than Modrić: “I will miss Dawson much more than I’ll miss Modrić. Luka played with his brain, Michael with his heart. I know who gave his all to Tottenham!”
