Robin van Persie is set to be confirmed as a Manchester United player in the next 48 hours after the Red Devils agreed a £24m fee with Arsenal for the striker.

The transfer saga involving the Dutchman has dominated the headlines this summer after the 29-year-old made public his plan not to sign a new deal at The Emirates in July as he entered the final year of his contract.

“Arsenal Football Club can confirm that terms have been agreed for the transfer of Robin van Persie to Manchester United,” read an Arsenal statement released on Wednesday.

“Van Persie will travel to Manchester on Thursday in order to agree personal terms and complete a medical ahead of the proposed move.”

Manchester City, Manchester United and Juventus emerged as the front-runners for Van Persie’s signature following his statement posted on his personal website last month.

Arsenal, however, hinted they would be willing to keep their captain and force him to see out the rest of his contract.

It is understood all three clubs had bids rejected for the forward before United upped their offer, with the Red Devils the only of the three sides Van Persie would consider joining.
