Giggs: RVP signing sends out a ‘big message’ to Man Utd’s rivals

Ryan Giggs believes Manchester United's signing of Robin van Persie is a statement of intent from the Red Devils

Ryan Giggs believes Manchester United’s signing of Robin van Persie has signalled the Red Devils’ intent to win back the Premier League title this season.

Van Persie made his United debut as a second-half substitute as Sir Alex Ferguson’s men suffered defeat in their opening Premier League game at Everton on Monday night.

The Dutchman penned a four-year deal with the 19-time English champions last week after quitting Arsenal, and Giggs is adamant the striker has made the right decision in moving to Old Trafford.

“It [the van Persie signing] sends out a big message,” Giggs told United’s website. “And it’s great when a player comes out and says he wants to come to the club as well.

“I’m biased but players should want to come to United because you’re always guaranteed to be up there challenging for trophies, there’s a great team spirit, top facilities and you get to play for a great manager. There are so many plus points.”

United were pipped to the title last season by derby rivals Manchester City on goal difference – and Giggs insists a similar effort from the Red Devils this term should see them win their 20th top-flight crown.

“It wasn’t a nice feeling to lose the title last season – it never is, but it was the manner in which we lost it which was tough to take,” he continued.

“I’m sure if we put that much effort in again and get that little bit of luck then we’ll go that extra step.”
