Spurs’ priority was keeping Bale! Twitter reacts to Modrić reports
Luka Modrić is reportedly close to joining Real Madrid, prompting a flurry of activity from Tottenham fans on Twitter
Luka Modrić is expected to fly out to Spain on Thursday to complete a reported £23.5m move from Tottenham Hotspur to Real Madrid.
The 26-year-old has been relentlessly linked with a move away from White Hart Lane this summer, and although most Spurs fans saw the Croatian’s apparent departure coming, some expressed their dismay at the touted transfer fee on Twitter.
Here are some of the Tweets that caught our eye.
Tottenham fan Sukh Sandhu (@Mastermind_Sukh) believes Gareth Bale staying was the priority this summer: “If you told me we would lose Modrić but keep Bale this summer, I would have taken that all day long #perspective!”
However, Sir Bond (@reanege) reckons Real Madrid boss José Mourinho is laughing at the transfer fee: “Jose must be laughing loud… RT @CL_football: Such a low fee for Modrić. Real Madrid getting a good deal.”
Ashh Culés! (@Ashh_AS9) is the first of many infuriated Spurs fans: “Yes, Modrić wanted out but even so, stand at your £40m price tag not lower it to £23.5m #crazy!”
Ryan Purcell (@RyanPurcell) wasn’t impressed with Modrić at Tottenham last season, but thought the midfielder played well at Euro 2012: “Judging Modrić’s performances for Spurs last year he worth a lot LESS than £23m. Judging his performances for Croatia he worth much more!”
Lee Sherburn (@Bridgeboyo) is bemused by Tottenham’s transfer tactics: “What the hell is wrong with Tottenham? Modrić to go to Real Madrid for 20 odd million when they could’ve had £40m from Chelsea last year!”
Abbey Kay Lawal (@IAmMayGem) is angry at the Spurs chairman: “So [Levy is] finally letting Modrić leave for less than £30m after having rejected £30m plus Alex last season from #CFC?!”
But Manchester United fan Matt Kettle (@Mufc_Matt) believes there must be a swap deal involved: “Only reasonable solution I have to Modrić going so cheap, is that there’s most likely a deal to be done in the opposite direction.”
Chris Matthews (@Chrismatthews16) puts the fee in context: “Modrić for £23m? That’s £3m more than Jordan Henderson and Andy Carroll, well… The transfer market is crazy.”
United fan Phillippe Grande (@bigphil2003) consoles himself with the club’s shrewd signing of Shinji Kagawa: “To be fair we also paid £13m for the best player in the Bundesliga last year. Better deal than the Modrić one in my opinion!”
AJS (@AJSturt) wants Spurs to move on from the Modrić transfer saga: “Let’s hope the Modrić news is true so we can get on and bring players in. Bit disappointed with the fee but Levy knows what he’s doing #THFC!”
Tom Furr (@tomfurr) names who he thinks Spurs should be trying to sign: “Goodbye Modrić. Adebayor, Lloris, Damiao, and Moutinho would be fantastic replacements……… Hope Daniel Levy has something planned #levytime”
And, Jack O’Mahoney (@RealJackom) is a gracious Spurs fan: “Good luck to Luka he deserves to be in a world class team! Been top class for the club.#Modric #RealMadrid #COYS #THFC”
