West Ham boss Sam Allardyce admits defeat over Andy Carroll

Sam Allardyce admits West Ham United have no real chance of bringing Andy Carroll to Upton Park this summer.

The Hammers have been heavily linked with a move for the Liverpool striker, with some reports claiming the two clubs had agreed a loan deal with a view to a permanent transfer.

But Allardyce, who guided West Ham back into the English top flight via the Championship play-offs last season, has now all but ruled out United’s chances of landing the 23-year-old.

“I would probably have stuck my neck out and said we would almost certainly stay up with him on board,” Allardyce said.

“We wouldn’t have thought we would have had any chance of signing a player of Andy Carroll’s capabilities but it became clear a couple of weeks ago there was a possibility of a loan. Unfortunately at this moment, it’s not the case.”

Carroll has failed to live up to the hype surrounding his £35m transfer to Liverpool from Newcastle United in January 2011, managing just 11 goals in 56 appearances for the Reds.
