Kieran Gibbs admits that staying injury-free has been a key factor behind his impressive start to the season at Arsenal.

The left-back was limited to just 22 appearances last season after struggling with a stomach injury and only played 20 games in 2010-11.

But Gibbs has strung together a number of sparkling display’s for Arsène Wenger’s men this season and has started all seven of the Gunners’ games so far.

The 23-year-old admits he has been encouraged by his early season form and is aiming for more consistency in the games to come.

“I feel my performances have been positive this season,” Gibbs told Arsenal Player. “I’ve kept fit which has been important for me – especially over the last couple of years where I struggled to stay fit.

“I always said if I can get a good run of games under my belt, I can always get stronger and hopefully be more consistent – which is what I’m doing at the minute. I’m happy to be fit and I’m happy to be playing.”

Gibbs has developed a reputation as an attack-minded defender and he admits that forward play has always been an important part of his game.

“The boss is always telling me, ever since pre-season, to play high and wide and stretch the team, to let the midfielders have more room,” Gibbs said.

“It’s part of my game as well and I feel I play the game how I think it should be played. That’s probably where that comes from.”
