Cristiano Ronaldo’s late strike helped Real Madrid to a dramatic 3-2 victory over Manchester City in their opening Group D game in the Champions League.

Roberto Mancini’s side twice took the lead through Edin Dzeko and Aleksandar Kolarov, but Marcelo and Karim Benzema equalised before Ronaldo netted the winner in added time.

Here is the best of the reaction from the professionals on Twitter, in chronological order.

Queens Park Rangers defender Nedum Onuoha (‏@NOnuoha) can’t believe what he’s seeing: “I never ever thought I’d see City playing at the Bernabéu. This is awesome!”

Rio Ferdinand ‏(@rioferdy5) predicts a long night for Joe Hart: “@Cristiano already warming up, Joe Hart with a crucial save!”

Meanwhile, former Red Devils star Gary Neville (‏@GNev2) gives an insight about the gamesmanship involved in Champions League ties: “Madrid always cheeky with pitch. Night before leave it dry. Night of game soaking wet. The quickest pitch you will ever see. It shocks you.”

Former Bradford star Chris Kamara (‏@chris_kammy) heaps praise on Hart: “Joe Hart the only reason Manchester City are level, Real Madrid playing very well with City dangerous on the break.”

Everton defender Sylvain Distin (‏@sylvaind15tin) is seriously impressed by Hart: “20 minutes gone. A lot of mistakes, no goals thanks to an amazing Joe Hart. Should the whole City defence retire ? Ha ha ha!”

Former Aston Villa midfielder George Boateng (@george1boateng) is amazed by a buccaneering Yaya Touré run: “@IanTaylor7 #Yaya must be the best midfielder in the Premier League: pace power vision and passing ability!”

Cheslea defender Ashley Cole ‏(@TheRealAC3) is also having fun watching a great Champions League game after Kolarov puts City back ahead: “What a great game this is, great place to get a win, and against very good team!”

Former Villa forward Ian Taylor (‏@IanTaylor7) thinks City now have it won – until Benzema scores: “Wow!!! 2-1!!!! Great ball in from #Kolarov SURELY game over??? ……….half way through that tweet and #Benzema scores!!! 2-2!!!”
