Chelsea’s John Terry gets four-game ban and £220,000 fine

John Terry has been handed a four-game ban and £220,000 fine by the Football Association following the incident involving QPR defender Anton Ferdinand.

Chelsea captain Terry, who retired from international duty hours before the hearing was set to begin, was found guilty of a charge of misconduct on Thursday afternoon.

The 31-year-old centre-half was cleared of racially abusing Ferdinand in court back in July.

An FA statement said Terry had been charged with “using abusive and/or insulting words and/or behaviour towards Queens Park Rangers’ Anton Ferdinand and which included a reference to colour and/or race contrary to FA Rule E3[2] in relation to the Queens Park Rangers FC versus Chelsea FC fixture at Loftus Road on 23 October 2011.”

Following the verdict, Terry released a statement saying that he “has asked for the detailed written reasons of the decision and will consider them carefully before deciding whether to lodge an appeal.”

Terry, who captained Chelsea to a 6-0 Capital One Cup victory over Wolves on Tuesday, has 14 days in which to lodge an appeal.

Terry opted to retire from international football ahead of the commencement of the hearing, claiming that the FA had made his position “untenable”.

A Chelsea statement read: “Chelsea Football Club notes and respects today’s decision by the Football Association regarding John Terry.

“We also recognise that John has the right to appeal that decision.

“It is therefore inappropriate for us to comment further on the matter at this time.”
