Fernando Alonso: Formula 1 title race can change in one weekend

Fernando Alonso insists he will not rest on his laurels as the Formula 1 season reaches its climax, with the Ferrari driver leading the standings by 37 points.

Alonso finished third at last weekend’s Italian Grand Prix to maintain his place at the top of the pile, ahead of Lewis Hamilton, Kimi Raikkonen and defending champion Sebastian Vettel.

But despite his lead, the Spaniard is taking nothing for granted as the race for the title heats up, starting with next weekend’s Singapore Grand Prix.

“I must face these seven races like a chaser and not a leader because there are 175 points up for grabs and 37 are nothing. It can all change in one race,” Alonso told Spanish newspaper Marca.

“My only objective in Singapore is to win. I have to put on a perfect display right to the end.”

He added: “There will be some twists and turns among the title contenders in the final run-in, as it’s a closely-fought battle. It’s easier when you’ve got an advantage over the rest. I’m more relaxed than I was last year.”

And asked who of his rivals he feared most, Alonso replied: “Hamilton is the only one who is capable of winning without having the best car, which is evident as the others only win when they have a good car.”
