John Terry announces retirement from international football

John Terry has announced his retirement from international football after making 78 appearances for England in a career spanning nine years.

The 31-year-old, who was twice stripped of the national team captaincy, said his decision comes in response to the Football Association’s disciplinary charge over alleged comments made to QPR defender Anton Ferdinand during a match last Autumn.

The Chelsea captain was cleared of racially abusing the centre-half during the Premier League clash at Loftus Road last October at Westminster Magistrates’ Court in July.

“I’m today announcing my retirement from international football,” said Terry in a statement released on Sunday night.

“Representing and captaining my country is what I dreamed of as a boy and it has been a truly great honour.

“I feel the FA, in pursuing charges against me where I have already been cleared in court of law, have made my position untenable.”

Terry, who captained England 34 times, scored six goals in 78 games for the national team.
