Liverpool’s Carragher: I’m jealous of Man Utd’s Giggs and Scholes

Jamie Carragher admits he is “jealous” of the success of Manchester United veterans Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes.

The 34-year-old has notched up 704 appearances for Liverpool after making his debut against Middlesbrough in 1997, winning the Champions League, two FA Cups and the League Cup three times during a sparkling career at Anfield.

However, United legends Giggs and Scholes have 22 Premier League winners’ medals between them, and Carragher revealed his envy for the duo as Liverpool’s 22-year wait for a top-flight title continues.

“At times it can be difficult, especially over the last few years when it hasn’t gone well,” he told the Daily Mail. “It’s great when you’re winning, it’s fantastic.

“I’ve been one of the main players for Liverpool, winning the European Cup, winning the Cup treble. I played for my team my whole life. I’m probably jealous of Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes and their titles and European Cups.

“I’d love to have won the league for Liverpool as it’s been so long. But were we ever really good enough? We never threw it away. There was always someone better than us.”

Carragher also heaped praise on Liverpool’s new manager Brendan Rodgers, with the centre-half confident he can fit into the Northern Irishman’s preferred style of play.

“I’ve loved working with him,” he added. “Training has been fantastic. Brendan is a great communicator and a great man-manager.

“I get frustrated when people say, ‘Oh, you just put your foot in’ or ‘you’re a great leader or character’. I’m not Xabi Alonso but I can play football, I can pass the ball. I’ve done it my whole life; I’ve played from the back.”
