David de Gea claims Manchester City are capable of beating anyone – including Barcelona and Real Madrid in the Champions League this season.

The Spain goalkeeper featured in both of Manchester United’s defeats by the Eastlands outfit in the Premier League last season and also faced Barça and Real during his spell at Atlético Madrid.

Roberto Mancini’s side were handed a tough assignment in Europe’s elite club competition after they were pitted with La Liga winners Real, Dutch champions Ajax and Bundesliga holders Borussia Dortmund in the group stage.

But the 21-year-old is impressed by the depth in Roberto Mancini’s squad and the Red Devils shot-stopper is confident the English champions can match any side in Europe.

“City are a great team,” De Gea told Marca. “They are full of great players in all positions. The substitutes are also top-class.

“It will be really difficult for Real Madrid, both in the Bernabéu and in Manchester. You don’t get anything for free in the Champions League.

“City has a similar style to Real. It is quick to get the ball forward and looks to directly attack.

“The strike-force is deadly, as the club has an incredible group of strikers. But if you want to win the Champions League you’ve got to beat the best teams, and City are one of them.”

He continued: “It’s not about whether the team’s style of play will suit Real.

“The team is full of great players, who are very talented and can cause you damage at any moment. They are capable of beating anyone, whether that’s Real Madrid or Barcelona.”
