Michael Carrick has revealed his delight at being part of Roy Hodgson’s England set-up after missing out on a spot at the European championship.

The 31-year-old, who has earned 23 caps for the Three Lions, is set to feature in England’s opening World Cup qualifier against Moldova in the absence of injured duo Gareth Barry and Scott Parker.

Carrick was not selected as part of Hodgson’s initial 23-man travelling party to Poland and Ukraine, and contrary to reports, the former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder insisted he was not on the stand-by list.

After holding talks with Hodgson, the United star is eager to forget about this summer’s disappointment and instead focus on England’s bid to reach Brazil.

“We have got some massive games ahead and I am just delighted to be here and be part of things again,” said Carrick.

“It’s up to me now to play well enough to earn the right to stay in the squad and hopefully become part of the team.”

He added: “I have explained the reasons and I think it is best for me and for everyone to move on.

“I have been hugely impressed with the manager and his staff. It really is a good set-up.

“We had a good friendly against Italy and we just want to carry that on and keep trying to improve and put into practice the new ways the manager wants to play.”

England begin their qualifying campaign with a trip to Moldova on Friday, before welcoming Ukraine to Wembley next week.
