QPR's Esteban Granero insists it was "not a tough decision" to leave Real Madrid and move to the Hoops this summer
Esteban Granero has revealed that it was not a difficult decision to leave his boyhood club Real Madrid and join Queens Park Rangers this summer.
The 25-year-old signed a four-year deal with the Hoops after finalising a £9m switch from the defending La Liga champions in August.
“It was not a tough decision [to leave and] to come here,” said Granero. “I said before, I’m hungry, and here I will be able to grow as a player and experience this new system in England.”
The Spain Under-21 international first joined Los Blancos as an eight-year-old, progressing through the ranks at Madrid before leaving to join Getafe in 2007.
However, Granero’s impressive performances for his new club convinced Madrid to exercise a buyback option and the midfielder returned to the Bernabéu outfit in 2009.
But after spending three seasons as a utility player – he was limited to just 17 appearances in Madrid’s title-winning campaign – the Spanish star felt the time was right for a change in his career.
“I have spent three years in Real Madrid, and played plenty of games in La Liga and Europe,” added Granero.
“Real Madrid is a great club and I have played there since I was eight. I spent three years in the first-team.
“I will always be thankful to Real Madrid. But it was time to change, and the best way to change was QPR.
“Since joining two weeks ago, my thoughts are here and I don’t miss Real Madrid. It wasn’t that tough to leave, I wanted to be part of QPR.”
Granero had previously attracted interest from Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur, but the midfielder insisted once he was aware of QPR’s interest, his heart was set on a move to Loftus Road.
“All I can say is, every summer there are always many clubs that are interested,” he said.
“This is good for players and it has always happened. Since I talked to QPR, I didn’t think about going anywhere else.”
