Fenerbahce are as big as Chelsea and Liverpool, insists Raul Meireles

Raul Meireles has claimed Fenerbahce are as big a club as Liverpool and Chelsea after the midfielder completed his move to Turkish outfit on Tuesday.

The 29-year-old has signed a four-year deal at the Super Lig runners-up, leaving the Blues after just one season at Stamford Bridge.

Meireles, who also spent a year at Liverpool before joining Chelsea, revealed his former Reds team-mate Dirk Kuyt helped convince the Portugal international to make the move to Fenerbahce.

“I can’t wait to get started – Fenerbahce is as big a club as Chelsea, Liverpool and Porto,” Meireles told FB TV.

“I had a great season playing at Liverpool with Kuyt. He told me about Fenerbahce and encouraged me to make the move.

“I have friends playing in Turkey. Kuyt has told be on several occasions that Istanbul is a beautiful city, I’m very excited about the prospect of playing here.”

Meireles was part of the Chelsea side which won the Champions League, although he was suspended for their 4-3 penalty shootout victory over Bayern Munich in the final.

And the former Porto midfielder is looking forward to winning further silverware at Fenerbahce.

“I’m a team player, I love to win but what’s more important is that the team wins.

“I can promise the fans that I will always give it my all and be a professional.

“For me, it’s all about work, work, work. My goal is to win trophies here, I will do everything I can to try and make it happen.”
