Time for Ronaldo to head home to United

Cristiano Ronaldo is apparently feeling a bit blue at Real Madrid but if he wants to cheer up then he should return to his spiritual home at Manchester United.

Ronaldo has performed superby since moving to Madrid three years ago, with 150 goals in 149 appearances, but all he has to show for it is one La Liga title and a Copa Del Rey.

Indeed, Ronaldo’s time in the Spanish capital is reminiscent of his former United team-mate’s stint at Old Trafford – Ruud van Nistelrooy.

The prolific Dutchman plundered a remarkable 95 goals in 150 games in his five years at United but all he had to show for it was one Premier League title and an FA Cup.

Van Nistelrooy’s excellence deserved more trophies and luckily he went on to win La Liga twice with Madrid, but what a shame it would be if Ronaldo stayed at Los Blancos only to return a meagre trophy haul as a result.

Ronaldo could not stop winning trophies at United – he was on course to be as decorated as the likes of Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes with three titles, a Champions League, an FA Cup, two League Cups and the Fifa Club World Cup.

But he has slowed down since moving to Madrid and although they wrestled the title from Barcelona last year do not bet on it happening again this season.

Barça are just too brilliant – their Spanish Super Cup second-leg nightmare was surely a one-off.

As long as Ronaldo stays in Madrid, he will never get the trophy haul his talent deserves – just imagine a front four of Robin van Persie, Wayne Rooney, Shinji Kagawa and Ronaldo.

Lloris faces a fight for starting spot

Hugo Lloris will have to fight for his place in the starting line-up at Tottenham – and Didier Deschamps is right to worry the French goalkeeper might fail to oust Brad Friedel as Spurs’ No1 this season.

Lloris might be a good player but he encapsulates exactly what was wrong with Spurs’ transfer policy this summer – it was late and it was frantic.

Did they need Lloris? Probably, Friedel is 41 and finding a new long-term replacement for a goalkeeper has been a battle many top clubs have lost in recent years.

But if they wanted him, it seems odd they left it so late – rumours were circulating as early as July that the club wanted to bring the France captain to the club.

Leaving it until deadline day does not do anything to help a team that has laboured to an underwhelming start, and does nothing to help ease his transition into the club.

Friedel has been allowed to get a couple of starts under his belt and extended his record of consecutive starts to 307 matches – proof that it is going to take Lloris a little more than just arriving at White Hart Lane to get a place in the side.
