Robin van Persie and Rafael both scored second-half goals to help Manchester United to a 2-1 victory over Liverpool in the pick of this weekend’s Premier League games.

Elsewhere, Manchester City and Arsenal shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw at the Etihad, while on Saturday, Southampton secured their first league win of the season.

Here is the best of the reaction from the professionals on Twitter over the course of hectic weekend.

Everton captain Phil Neville (‏@fizzer18) is thrilled with his side’s 3-0 victory over Swansea City: “Good three points and good to score three goals. It should have been eight – great travelling support again thank you – see you at Elland Road on Tuesday – I can’t wait!!

Southampton legend Matt Le Tissier (‏@mattletiss7) is ecstatic to see the Saints beat Aston Villa 4-1: “So pleased for Nigel Adkins. No one deserved that more than him. Loving watching the Saints on Football First. Gaston [Ramirez] looks a very good footballer from what I’ve seen so far #sorryvillafans :-)”

West Bromwich Albion goalkeeper Ben Foster (‏@BenFoster) is moved by the pre-match tributes to the Hillsborough victims at Anfield: “Fair play to the managers and players at Liverpool versus Manchester United, nice to see Respect. Looking forward to this one.”

Former Red Devils defender Mikael Silvestre (‏@IamMSilvestre) can guess what Sir Alex Ferguson’s pre-match instructions will be: “Amazing scenes at Anfield – I can hear the gaffer saying play the game not the occasion!”

England legend Gary Lineker (‏@GaryLineker) gives his thoughts on Jonjo Shelvey’s sending off: “Shelvey gets a red card for reckless tackle. Slightly harsh but can’t take risks like that in modern game. #shelved. Epitome of a top quality Premier League game. Passion, commitment, skill and non-stop action.”

While Jonjo Shelvey ‏(@shelveyJ) later Tweets his thoughts on the red card: “I apologise to the fans for getting sent off but no way was I pulling out of that tackle in a game of that importance. I’m sorry.”

United centre-half Rio Ferdinand (‏@rioferdy5) is delighted with three points: “Great occasion today, thought Liverpool put on a really good day – it was a hard game but nothing beats winning at Anfield.”

Manchester City striker John Guidetti ‏(@superguidetti) wishes his team-mates luck: “Good luck boys against #Arsenal today. What a game. Let’s win and show why we are The #Champions :) #MCFC!”

City striker Sergio Aguero ‏(@aguerosergiokun) is pleased to return to first-team football but disappointed by the result: “It’s a shame that we let those three points away at the end. But this is just the beginning and everything will go better, I’m sure. And to all, thanks for the support on my comeback. I felt really good on the field and with every match I’ll be better in shape.”

Injured QPR defender Anton Ferdinand (‏@anton_ferdinand) loves the Hoops’ strike at White Hart Lane: “What a pass from @alefaurlin and finish from Zamora #QPR!”

But Tottenham goalkeeper Brad Friedel (‏@friedel_b) is delighted to see Spurs come from behind and win: “Great win today. Showed a lot of character after a poor first half. Thought the second half was more ourselves!! Onwards and upwards.”

Finally, on Monday, former Liverpool captain Phil Thompson (‏@Phil_Thompson4) is still irked by Shelvey’s sending off: “I’ve been watching all morning and still don’t see why it was only Jonjo who gets red, maybe Jonjo should have claimed he was injured!”
