Steven Gerrard: Liverpool v Man Utd is still the biggest game in the world

Steven Gerrard believes Liverpool against Manchester United is still the biggest game in club football, with the fierce rivals set to clash at Anfield on Sunday.

The 19-time champions make the trip to Merseyside looking to keep pace with Chelsea and Manchester City at the top of the Premier League, while the Reds are hoping to record their first league victory under Brendan Rodgers.

Gerrard, who has scored six goals against the Red Devils, maintained the north west derby still eclipses El Clásico, with the Liverpool skipper calling on the club’s fans to get behind Rodgers’ side on Sunday.

“For me, it’s the biggest because the Premier League is the biggest league in the world and these are the two most successful clubs,” Gerrard to the Liverpool Echo.

“I’m not being biased when I say that – I think Liverpool versus Man U is the biggest game. Maybe Barca and Madrid is up there close to that, but for me it’s still this one.

“It’s a massive game – we’re looking for our first win of the season and there would be no-one better for us to start getting three points on the board against.

“Hopefully then we can go on a run of winning games and move up the league because our start to the season has been inconsistent.”

He added: “The fans are going to play a big part on Sunday. We need them to make as much noise as they can and get behind us.

“Hopefully the players can perform to our level and it can be a fantastic day that everyone can remember for the game and we can put a good show on for them.”
