Gareth Bale: Tottenham ‘ecstatic’ at ending 23-year Old Trafford hoodoo

Gareth Bale said Tottenham Hotspur were “ecstatic” at ending their 23-year wait for a victory at Manchester United following their triumph at Old Trafford on Saturday.

Jan Vertonghen put the visitors ahead in the fourth minute, before Bale’s superb solo strike doubled Tottenham’s first-half lead.

The Red Devils responded after the interval as Nani netted, before a whirlwind couple of minutes saw Clint Dempsey and Shinji Kagawa both score.

Spurs clung on for victory, and Bale, who made his Tottenham debut at Old Trafford in 2007, admitted André Villas-Boas’ side were delighted with the historic result.

“Ever since I’ve been at the club, every time we come here we seem to either get a lead and lose it or get beaten,” said Bale.

“Over the last 20-odd years it’s been one of those things that happens in football, but now it’s finally over.

“The lads are absolutely ecstatic, delighted to get the three points and put ourselves right back in there at the top of the table.”

Belgium defender Vertonghen insists Spurs were always confident of successfully masterminding an upset, with dangerous players such as Bale, Jermain Defoe and Aaron Lennon capable of punishing United.

“It was a great start for us and for me, it was amazing to score at Old Trafford,” said Vertonghen.

“We had a feeling we could do something here. We have a lot of pace in our team with Jermain, Gareth and Aaron Lennon. That’s why we were positive.

“We had a good feeling and from the first moments, we tried to press them and tried to attack.The second half was a different story, but it was an amazing performance.”
