US Open 2012: Andy Murray is ready to win first Grand Slam – Ivan Lendl

Ivan Lendl has declared Andy Murray is “ready to go and win” his maiden Grand Slam after the British No1 beat Tomas Berdych in four sets to reach Monday’s US Open final.

The 25-year-old had to battle with blustery conditions in a tricky semi-final against the dangerous sixth seed, but Murray eventually sealed a 5-7 6-2 6-1 7-6 (9-7) victory in three hours 58 minutes.

It will be the third seed’s fifth Major final – he lost to Roger Federer in Flushing Meadows in 2008, followed by successive defeats at the Australian Open in 2010 and 2011, and most recently losing to the 17-time Grand Slam champion at Wimbledon this summer.

But Murray’s coach Lendl is confident the Scot, who claimed Olympic gold in August, has learned lessons from his defeat by Federer at SW19, and can finally end his pursuit of a Major title.

“Andy is ready to go and win. The lesson he learned from the Wimbledon final was a tough one but he learned it well,” Lendl told the BBC.

“If you look at his losses he has been beaten by Roger Federer three times and Novak Djokovic.

“After Wimbledon I said to him he should be proud of the way he handled the pressure because there was a big difference between that loss and the one he had to Djokovic in Australia the previous year.”

He added: “I lost to Bjorn Borg and I lost to Jimmy Connors twice, and with Mats Wilander on grass in Australia I was not in my prime and still learning.

“Andy is now in his prime.”
