Fabio Borini believes Liverpool would be full of confidence for their clash with Manchester United if Brendan Rodgers’ side can secure a victory over Young Boys on Thursday.

The five-time European Cup winners start their Europa League campaign with a trip to the Switzerland after a difficult start to the domestic season.

Rodgers’ side are yet to win in the Premier League, and the Italian striker is confident a positive result against Young Boys would be the perfect preparation for Sunday’s showdown.

“Positive results always give us confidence,” Borini told Liverpool’s website.

“They give anyone confidence. Even playing away, getting a point or a good performance would be a good start for the game on Sunday.”

The 21-year-old insisted the Europa League is a strong competition despite playing a perceived supporting role to the Champions League.

And Borini believes the chance to face the winners of Europe’s premier club competition in the Super Cup next August acts as an added incentive to win the Europa League.

“I think it’s a great competition to play because it’s really close to the level of the Champions League,” he added.

“I think it’s got the same importance because at the end the champions will play against the champions of the Champions League, which is a great pleasure.

“It’s a very good level because you can see it has got many teams that won the league as well or just came third.”

Young Boys v Liverpool: Pre-match facts

• Liverpool have had two notable Swiss players: defenders Stéphane Henchoz (1999-05) and Philipp Degen (2008-10). Henchoz is remembered particularly fondly, having helped the Reds to win a treble of the FA Cup, League Cup and Uefa Cup in 2000-01.

• Young Boys’ right-back Scott Sutter was born in England, and played youth team football for Millwall, Barnet, Aston Villa and Charlton Athletic before moving to his father’s home country and starting his professional career with Grasshopper-Club.

• Liverpool’s record in eight games against Swiss sides reads W5 D2 L1. Their only defeat against Swiss opponents came at Servette in September 1971, and they are now unbeaten in seven games against Swiss clubs.

• Young Boys lost to Tottenham Hotspur in the 2010-11 Champions League play-offs, their only previous encounter with English opponents. They won 3-2 in the first leg in Berne, but three goals from former Liverpool striker Peter Crouch helped Spurs win the return leg 4-0.
