Andy Carroll has hit out at Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers by claiming that he was not given a fair chance to prove himself at Anfield.

The £35m striker was loaned out to West Ham United on transfer deadline day in August, despite Liverpool’s failure to bring in another forward player to replace the former Newcastle hit-man.

Before Carroll’s move to Upton Park, Rodgers had hinted that he did not believe the 23-year-old could fit in to his system – but the striker disagrees.

“I haven’t really had a fair chance at Liverpool,” Carroll told ESPN. “I was really told that I should move on to keep playing regular football. Obviously, I didn’t really get a chance there.

“A new manager came in and I wasn’t part of his plans. For me to play football, that was my chance to do that. That is why I am here at Upton Park.

“I think I could fit into every system. I believe in what I can do. Obviously [Rodgers] has his beliefs and he didn’t think that. But for me, obviously, it was better to move on instead of waiting for my chance, which he told me might not come.”

Carroll has made four appearances for Sam Allardyce’s West Ham so far this season and was a second-half substitute in England’s 5-0 win over San Marino.
