Theo Walcott has been sent to hospital for a chest scan on a suspected broken rib following a nasty clash with San Marino goalkeeper Aldo Simoncini early on in England’s 5-0 win at Wembley.

The Arsenal forward was clattered to the ground by the shot-stopper on the edge of the penalty area in the fifth minute.

After receiving treatment, Walcott was substituted and despite leaving the field without help, he called for a stretcher after only managing to make it halfway around the Wembley pitch.

England boss Hodgson revealed that the 23-year-old would spend the night in hospital after the game.

“It was a penalty, that’s for sure,” Hodgson told ITV. “It was a very bad challenge. He’s in hospital and will stay in hospital overnight.

“He’s having scans and tests and we can only hope that it’s not too bad.

“But it was a very poor challenge and really we should have been 1-0 up even after two or three minutes from a penalty.”
