Stewart Downing helped Liverpool to a 1-0 victory over Anzhi Mackhachkala on Thursday to leave Brendan Rodgers’ men top of their Europa League group.

Elsewhere, Tottenham Hotspur managed to salvage a 1-1 draw with Maribor, while Newcastle United were 1-0 winners against Club Brugge.
