Faroe Islands 1 Ireland 4: I don’t listen to speculation – Trapattoni

Giovanni Trapattoni insisted he has been ignoring speculation over his job after the Republic of Ireland eased to a convincing win against the Faroe Islands in Torshavn.

The visitors finally made the breakthrough after a difficult first half in the 46th minute, when Mark Wilson’s long-range effort was deflected into the top corner of the net.

Shortly after, Jonathan Walters doubled the visitors’ advantage when the Stoke City striker headed Wilson’s cross past Gunnar Nielsen.

However, Trapattoni’s side conceded their eighth goal of the campaign after Hansen netted for the visitors – but an own goal from the home side put Ireland back ahead in 72nd minute, before Darren O’Dea’s late strike sealed three points.

“Yes [it was the response I expected],” said Trapattoni.

“I am happy for the young players because all the team played very well but especially James McCarthy, Wilson, [Seamus] Coleman which was very important. The team deserved to win.”

When asked about his position as Ireland manager, the 73-year-old added: “I don’t hear the speculation [about my job]. I don’t think about it and I just prepare the team to win the next game.”

Meanwhile, Wigan Athletic midfielder James McCarthy revealed it was a relief to come away with three points after last Friday’s 6-1 defeat by Germany.

“Yes [it's a relief to get three points],” he said.

“It’s a hard place to come. Sweden came here the other night and they struggled although they ended up scoring two late goals.

“It was brilliant from the boys, we put a good shift in and we got the goals that we wanted, and it’s a great result to come away from here with.”
