Ireland 1 Germany 6: John O'Shea admits the visitors made Giovanni Trapattoni's side look ordinary in a big win at the Aviva
John O’Shea admitted Germany tore the Republic of Ireland apart after Joachim Löw’s men secured an emphatic victory at the Aviva Stadium.
Ireland started strongly before Borussia Dortmund midfielder Marco Reus scored a quick-fire brace just before half-time to put Germany in control.
Trapattoni’s side attempted to mount a comeback after the interval, but Darren O’Dea’s foul on Miroslav Klose allowed Mesut Özil to extend the visitors’ lead from the spot.
Klose managed to get on the score-sheet himself, finishing from an acute angle, before Toni Kroos netted a sparkling brace to make it six – substitute Andy Keogh scored a late consolation.
“Obviously the goals we conceded [contributed to a tough night] and we’ve let ourselves get too open to try and get back into the game,” said O’Shea.
“Germany are a good team as well. They made us look very ordinary tonight. They tore us apart. We have to dust ourselves down as quickly as possible.
“The way the group is going to go, obviously at home you want to get something against teams, but we were well and truly beaten tonight. We have to forget about this as quick as we can.
“I know it’s going to sound obvious [but] we have a game in a few days which we have to get ourselves right for. By the look of it, Sweden had a tough game at the Faroe Islands.
“We have to get on with it. It’s a terrible defeat but hopefully we won’t take too long to recover from it.” ![]()
