Fabio Borini will be out of action for three months after Liverpool confirmed the striker requires an operation on a fractured bone in his foot.

The 21-year-old aggravated the problem first picked up in a 2-1 defeat by Manchester United while training with Italy’s Under-21 side in Pescara last week.

Borini’s injury leaves Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers with Luis Suárez as his only recognised forward – Reds striker Andy Carroll is currently on a season-long loan at West Ham United.

A statement from the Merseyside outfit read: “The forward originally sustained an injury to the area during the recent Anfield clash with Manchester United.

“He then further aggravated the problem resulting in a fracture and returned from international duty with Italy last week.

“Borini was assessed by the club’s medical team upon his return to Melwood and a decision was made for the 21-year-old to have surgery.

“Typically, an injury of this nature requires a three-month rehabilitation period.”

Borini has scored once in 11 appearances for Liverpool since completing his £10m move from Roma to Anfield in July.
