Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney admits defensive concerns

Wayne Rooney has admitted his concern at Manchester United’s failure to keep clean sheets this season after the Red Devils were once again forced to come from behind to beat Stoke on Saturday.

Rooney inadvertently turned the ball into his own net to give Stoke an 11th-minute lead at Old Trafford before the England striker emphatically headed past Asmir Begović midway through the first half.

Robin van Persie and Danny Welbeck both scored either side of half-time to push the Red Devils clear, before Michael Kightly’s superb solo effort offered Tony Pulis’ side with hope of salvaging a point.

But Rooney netted his 200th club goal with a simple finish to wrap up three points for the 19-time English champions and leave them in touch with Premier League leaders Chelsea.

It was the seventh time in 11 games this season that the Red Devils had fallen behind – and Rooney admits his side’s failure to shut out the opposition is a serious concern.

“Of course it is a concern,” Rooney told the Daily Mail.

“We can’t keep doing that. No disrespect to Stoke, but better opposition will punish us. We need to keep working and keep defending well.

“Hopefully soon we will get the players back who can provide a bit of cover for us because if we want to be successful this season, we can’t keep doing that.”
