Chris Hughton hailed a “huge” result for Norwich after his side battled to their first league win of the season against Arsenal on Saturday.

Grant Holt put the home side ahead in the 19th minute when he slotted in after Vito Mannone had parried Alexander Tettey’s powerful shot into the striker’s path.

The Gunners never really got going and Hughton’s side showed grit and determination as they successfully shut out Arsène Wenger’s men at Carrow Road.

Their first league win of the season hoists Norwich into 15th place and leaves Arsenal languishing in ninth, 10 points behind league leaders Chelsea.

“It’s a huge result for us and what’s more pleasing than anything is that we thoroughly deserved it,” said Hughton.

“There’s no fluke about the result – and if our final ball was better than we probably could have finished the game off earlier.

“The result probably surprised a lot of other people but we’re a determined group here.

“They are always going to have lots of possession but we restricted their chances. It’s a well earned and overdue three points. It was about a team performance today. There’s never been a lack of belief in the dressing room.

“We know where we are – we’re going to have more days like that.”

Match-winner Holt also felt the Canaries were fully deserving of the three points. “I should have had a couple of more goals, but we are delighted with the win and great to get the win under the belt,” he said.

“We have been playing well, despite getting a couple of hidings, and we did well today.”
