Give Oscar and Eden Hazard time, says Chelsea’s Roberto Di Matteo
Roberto Di Matteo asks Chelsea fans not to expect too much of his side's summer recruits despite their impressive start

Roberto Di Matteo has never been one to get carried away with success and the Chelsea manager has warned Blues fans not to pile too much pressure on the club’s summer recruits despite their impressive start.
Stamford Bridge new-boys Oscar and Eden Hazard appear to have slotted seamlessly into the Blues’ midfield alongside Juan Mata to add some of the flair and creativity Chelsea have so often been accused of lacking in recent years.
Di Matteo has naturally been thrilled by the youngsters’ instant impact but is quick to remind Chelsea fans of their relative youth and the importance of not expecting too much too soon.
“The players that have come in have settled in quickly and that has been a big bonus,” said Di Matteo ahead of Manchester United’s visit to Stamford Bridge on Sunday.
“Oscar is talented but I don’t forget he is still only 21, and so is Hazard, and we don’t want to give them all the responsibility in the world. We cannot forget that even though they are important players for us and for their national teams too.
“They have come to a new country and a new league, and they are learning a new language and getting used to the high tempo English football.
“Oscar is playing all the games for his national team too and doing a lot of travelling, and you need to factor all those things in.”
Di Matteo’s men have only dropped two points in the league so far this term but go into Sunday’s showdown on the back of a disappointing Champions League defeat by Shakhtar Donetsk in midweek.
And the Chelsea boss knows that it is far too soon to be drawing conclusions from the league table despite their solid start to domestic affairs.
“We have had a good start but we need to show consistency over a long period of time,” he said. “We have a very busy schedule coming up and that will be a test for us and the depth of our squad.” ![]()
