Poland 1 England 1: We must improve, admits Wayne Rooney

Wayne Rooney admitted England must improve after securing a disappointing draw with Poland in their 2014 World Cup qualifier in Warsaw.

The Manchester United striker gave the Three Lions a first-half lead when the 26-year-old guided Steven Gerrard’s corner into the Poland net – it was his 32nd goal for England.

However, Roy Hodgson’s men were thoroughly unconvincing and in the 71st minute the home side equalised, with Kamil Glik out-jumping Joleon Lescott and heading past Joe Hart to tie the match.

“Do England have to improve to qualify? Yes, of course. We know we can play a lot better than that,” said Rooney.

“But at least we got the point. It was a hard-fought point. It was a difficult game, a difficult pitch. We weren’t at our best but we dug in and got a draw.

“We know we can play better but this is a difficult place to come. It is a decent point.

“We knew it was a tough group, but we’re confident. We believe in ourselves and we believe we are the best team in the group, so we are confident of qualifying.”
