Michael Owen praised Leighton Baines and Danny Welbeck after the pair helped England to a comfortable 5-0 victory over San Marino at Wembley.

Elsewhere, Gareth Bale’s brace secured Chris Coleman’s first win of his Wales reign, while the Republic of Ireland succumbed to a heavy defeat by Germany.

Here is a selection of the best Tweets from the professionals after a busy Friday night of World Cup qualifiers.

Former Tottenham chairman Lord Sugar ‏(@Lord_Sugar) is not impressed by a dull start to England’s game: “What a load of rubbish this England team is! 27 minutes playing against a Hackney Marshes Sunday team and it is still 0-0!”

Ex-Chelsea midfielder Jody Morris (‏@morriskid) likes Danny Welbeck’s goal: “Aaaannnd well done again Danny Wellbeck!”

France defender Mikael Silvestre (‏@IamMSilvestre) still has Manchester United at heart: “#ManUtd 2 San Marino 0”

Ex-Crystal Palace striker Mark Bright (‏@Mark__Bright) felt England should be doing better: “The Republic of Ireland are a far better than San Marino and they’re getting canned 5-0 by Germany, #CmonEngland”

But Irish celebrity Ross O’Carroll-Kelly (‏@RossOCK) remains positive: “A converted try and Ireland could still win this. #believe”

England legend Gary Lineker ‏(@GaryLineker) makes a valid point: “No easy games in international football nowadays. Well, unless you’re Germany or Spain or Brazil or….”

Stoke City striker Michael Owen ‏(@themichaelowen) gives his thoughts on the game: “Huge fan of Leighton Baines and I love how unselfish Welbeck is. Decent performance, no more than that. Game on Tuesday is a big one.”

United defender Rio Ferdinand ‏(@rioferdy5) got his prediction correct – and also praises Wales: “Did I say 5 – 0 England…..errrr, yes! Love it lads! Congratulations to Wales winning their first game under Chris Coleman and @AshWills84 as captain!”

Norwich star Iwan Roberts ‏(@iwanwroberts) hails the Wales display: “Delighted for Chris Colman. Tonight a top class performance by the lads. Bale is a bit special isn’t he?!”

Welsh boxer Joe Calzaghe (‏@RealJoeCalzaghe) is ecstatic to see Italy and Wales win: “Happy with the football tonight! Good Wins for WALES and the AZZURRI!”

Reading striker Noel Hunt ‏(@boyhunt) pays tribute to Ireland’s fans: “Irish fans again a real credit to the world and Ireland!! No boos through the game or at the end!! Hats off to ye again!!! Onto the next!!”
