Roy Hodgson’s men will face Poland on Wednesday after their 2014 World Cup qualifier was rescheduled due to a waterlogged pitch in Warsaw.

It came following a bad-tempered end in Serbia as England’s youngster side secured their qualification to the Under-21 European championship in 2013, while the Republic of Ireland were 4-1 winners in the Faroe Islands.

Here are a selection of Tweets from the professionals on Tuesday night.

Swansea winger Wayne Routledge (WayneRoutledge) comments on unsavoury scenes in Serbia: “That was mayhem…”

Former Liverpool striker Stan Collymore ‏(@StanCollymore) wants Serbia banned: “Seen three runs of the post-match scenes in Serbia now. My verdict is ban them from competitive football for 12 months, let them stew. Fines not working.”

Reading striker Jason Roberts (‏@JasonRoberts30) issues his support for Danny Rose after claims England’s Under-21 players were subjected to racist abuse: “Danny Rose, well done! I propose next time everyone walks STRAIGHT OFF THE PITCH!!! Then we will see how quickly “authorities” take to sort it…”

Piers Morgan ‏(@piersmorgan) pulls former England captain Michael Vaughan up on an overly optimistic Tweet: “At what? Water-polo? RT @MichaelVaughan: England to win 2-0 tonight…”

Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand (‏@rioferdy5) can’t understand why the referee isn’t calling the game off: “Someone get on that pitch and throw the ref through the puddles please then he’ll maybe realise the pitch is waterlogged!!”

While England legend Gary Lineker (‏@GaryLineker) uses a clever turn of phrase: “No one there seems to give a fork!”

Former Chelsea midfielder Jody Morris ‏(@morriskid) is upset the game has been called off: “Looks like I’l be watching the Scotland game…what a shambles in Poland!!”

Tottenham keeper Bradley Friedel (‏@friedel_b) cannot fathom why the roof wasn’t use: “Seriously?! A ground with a roof has a match cancelled due to excess rain?? Wow!”

Meanwhile, Reading striker Noel Hunt ‏(@boyhunt) is pleased to see the Republic of Ireland leading: “2-0 up and clearly on top now thanks for the updates!!! Four or five would be nice!!”

Ireland international David Meyler (‏@DavidMeyler) is pleased to play his part in a 4-1 win against the Faroes: “Fantastic result and performance by the lads. I’m over the moon to get on and play! #COYBIG #ClearEyesFullHeartsCantLose”

Aston Villa goalkeeper Shay Given (‏@No1shaygiven) felt it was a good response to last Friday’s defeat: “Good result for us tonight. Well-deserved three points. #COYBIG”

Meanwhile, Joey Barton ‏(@Joey7Barton) is enthralled by the result in Germany: “Wow! 4-4! Ibrahimovic has just taken out Mertesacker and referee missed it played on and they scored. OMG! Devoed!”

Ajax forward Ryan Babel (‏@RyanBabel) praises Robin van Persie for a super strike: “Great goal… @Persie_Official !!!!”

Holland legend Ruud Gullit (‏@GullitR) feels his nation are close to qualification: “Holland won 4-1 and has made a giant step to the World Cup in Brazil.”
