Tottenham’s Villas-Boas: My Porto feat bigger than Chelsea’s Euro win
Tottenham's André Villas-Boas says going unbeaten throughout a league season is a harder than winning the Champions League
André Villas-Boas believes Porto’s achievement of remaining unbeaten throughout a league campaign was a bigger feat than Chelsea’s Champions League triumph in May.
The Tottenham manager, whose side host Chelsea on Saturday, led Porto to the Primeira Liga title without suffering a loss in 2011, with his side also winning Portugal’s domestic cup and the Europa League.
Villas-Boas was sacked by the Blues in March after just eight months in charge at Stamford Bridge, and his successor Roberto Di Matteo guided Chelsea to the FA Cup and Champions League.
“Winning any league is extremely difficult but going through it unbeaten is also extremely difficult,” said Villas-Boas.
“The achievement that Arsenal did was remarkable and outstanding and probably won’t be repeated in the modern game as it happened in Porto with me. Which is more difficult? Remaining unbeaten in the league.”
Villas-Boas encountered many difficulties while at Chelsea, including disillusioned senior players unhappy with the sweeping changes the head coach was making at the club.
The 35-year-old was appointed as Tottenham boss in July and despite his disappointing spell at Stamford Bridge, Villas-Boas revealed the job taught him a lot of lessons.
“I’m going to see people who mean a lot to me, people who are part of my development as a coach,” he said. “I certainly feel I have become a better coach because of them.”
“They have helped me a lot on my development of career. People who gave everything for me, obviously it is special to encounter any team you have played or belonged in the past.”
Villas-Boas’ Tottenham will move two points behind Premier League leaders Chelsea should the home side manage to beat the Blues at White Hart Lane on Saturday.
