West Brom 3 QPR 2: We need to cut out defensive errors – Mark Hughes

Mark Hughes admitted Queens Park Rangers need to stop making defensive errors after suffering their fifth defeat of the season at West Bromwich Albion on Saturday.

The Baggies took a fifth-minute lead when James Morrison thundered a header past QPR goalkeeper Júlio César, before Zoltán Gera doubled the home side’s advantage with a close-range finish.

QPR improved after the interval and Adel Taarabt netted his second goal in as many games to give the visitors hope until Youssouf Mulumbu’s 85th-minute strike appeared to seal the win.

A late flurry from Hughes’ side saw Esteban Granero score with a curling shot from the edge of the area before José Bosingwa spurned a chance to seal a point deep into injury time when he fired over the crossbar.

“In the early part of the game we gave ourselves too much to do,” said Hughes.

“We talk about the fundamentals of defending and we didn’t do that. We didn’t start correctly.

“We were slow and not dynamic. They produced two good balls and we didn’t deal with that.

“If you go 2-0 down away from home it’s nigh-on impossible to get back into it. For the vast majority of the game I thought we were in control but we need to take the defensive errors out of our game.”

Meanwhile, West Brom manager Steve Clarke was pleased to see his side return to winning ways against the Hoops after a 1-1 draw with Aston Villa last weekend.

“Both teams were out there to win it. There were a few mistakes and some casual play in possession, but we had some good moves and the quality of the goals were top class,” said Clarke.

“Both teams looked as if they could score at any moment. We’ve got three points and that contributes to the great start we’ve had.”
