Arsène Wenger has asked the Arsenal fans travelling to Old Trafford for Saturday’s clash with Manchester United to give the striker a “respectful” reception.

The 29-year-old Dutchman quit Emirates Stadium to join United in a £24m move in the summer after netting 37 goals in all competitions for the Gunners last season.

Wenger’s side travel to Old Trafford looking to close the six-point gap on Sir Alex Ferguson’s men and the Frenchman is hoping the focus will be on the football rather than the sub-plot of Van Persie lining up against his former employers.

“I hope he gets a respectful [reception],” Wenger told a news conference. “We campaign against discrimination, it should not be different this week.

“Saturday is not about him [for us]. It is about getting a result. I am not surprised he has been a success [at United]. He makes intelligent runs.”

Van Persie, who spent eight years at Arsenal, has already scored nine goals in 12 appearances for United this term.
