Sir Alex Ferguson is expecting the Arsenal fans travelling to Old Trafford for Saturday’s clash with Manchester United to give Robin van Persie a warm reception.

The Holland striker sealed a £24m move to United after spending eight years in north London and on the back of a stunning campaign in which he netted 37 goals in all competitions for the Gunners.

Arsenal boss Arsène Wenger on Thursday called for his club’s travelling supporters to be “respectful” of Van Persie ahead of Saturday’s showdown.

And Ferguson is hoping the away fans will follow the Frenchman’s advice. “I think Arsène has laid his seed for his supporters in terms of respecting him,” said Ferguson.

“If you think about all the former players who come back to Old Trafford, they always get a warm applause.

“I don’t think that will be a problem tomorrow, I think the fans will recognise the eight years he gave them and that will be nice.”

Ferguson admits he has been thrilled with the impact Van Persie has had at Old Trafford, with the 29-year-old having already netted nine goals in 12 appearances this season.

“Robin is a mature player and I think that helps,” he stated. “The experience he’s got of playing eight years in England makes it easier for him to play for another English club.

“He’s been very satisfying for us. He’s made a fantastic start for us and hopefully he can keep it going.”

Robin van Persie is 3/1 to outscore Arsenal in Saturday’s game
