Cristiano Ronaldo helped Real Madrid secure a 1-1 draw against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday night, ending the Citizen’s hopes of a last-16 spot.

Meanwhile, at The Emirates, goals from Jack Wilshere and Lukas Podolski completed a 2-0 victory over Montpellier, booking Arsenal’s place in the knockout phase.

Here is the best of the Twitter reaction from the professionals to a busy night of Champions League football.

Liverpool youngster Suso (‏@suso30fernandez) is impressed by Benzema’s opener: “City vs Madrid. Well done Benzema.”

England legend Gary Lineker ‏(@GaryLineker) jokes that City boss Roberto Mancini could also be facing the sack – and subsequent hiring by Roman Abramovich: “The way this is going, If Abromovich had waited until tomorrow he could’ve appointed Mancini.”

Former Sunderland man Michael Gray ‏(@mickygray33) is impressed by Madrid’s start at the Etiahd: “Madrid are something else… As well as the class that is on show they work so hard to get the ball back… Amazing!”

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney ‏(@WayneRooney) hails his former team-mate: “Ronaldo is destroying people here!”

While Everton legend Peter Reid ‏(@reid6peter) adds: “Men against boys at the moment at the Etihad!”

Liverpool legend Dietmar Hamann ‏(@DietmarHamann) compares both teams: “How many top class players have City got compared to Madrid in starting XI – my count is 4-9 …City badly exposed..Why is Maicon not playing?”

Liverpool defender Jon Flanagan (‏@jon_flan93) is not impressed by Edin Dzeko: “Dzecko has been awful.”

United defender Rio Ferdinand (‏@rioferdy5) congratulates Jack Wilshere on his first goal since returning from injury: “Pleased for Jack Wilshere, getting a lovely goal tonight. I like the way he plays the game. #silky”

Celebrity Arsenal fan Piers Morgan (‏@piersmorgan) enjoys Lukas Podolski’s strike: “BOOOOOOOOOOOM!!!!!! What a goal! Brilliant by Podolski. 2-0.#Arsenal”

Ex-Newcastle defender Warren Barton (‏@warrenbarton2) ranks it as one of the best goals this term: “Goal of the season for Arsenal! Podolski ..??!”

Former Celtic frontman John Hartson (‏@JohnHartson10) reacts to Sergio Aguero’s second-half miss: “Not often disagree with Gary Neville but have to there – Aguero has got to score that chance.. A great chance to put City level.”

Marseille midfielder Joey Barton (‏@Joey7Barton) is happy to City equalise: “That’s put the cat amongst the pigeons. Didn’t think it was a pen. Aguero at it again!”

After City lose, United legend Gary Neville ‏(@GNev2) pinpoints why it has been a miserable week for the English clubs: “And the biggest difference I am seeing the moment between likes of Juve/ Borussia Dortmund and Real Madrid and our teams is the application to defend!”

And finally, Internazionale legend Marco Materazzi ‏(@iomatrix23) praises AC Milan’s Philippe Mexes for a stunning overhead kick: “Congratulations to Mexes!!! What a goal! Mamma Mia!… Voto 10 & Lode!”
