Arsenal have been dealt a blow in their pursuit of Ibrahim Afellay after the Dutchman revealed he is keen to seal a permanent transfer to Schalke.

The Gunners, who are long-term admirers of the Holland international, were reportedly keen on bringing him to north London on a loan deal from Barcelona in the summer, with the 26-year-old eventually sealing a move to the Bundesliga side for the season.

The attacking midfielder is also understood to be on Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool’s wish-list, but it appears he would be happy to extend his spell at the Veltins-Arena beyond this season.

“I feel very comfortable at Schalke,” Afellay told German newspaper Bild. “At the season’s end, we’ll talk about a permanent deal.”

Afellay sealed a move to Barcelona in January 2011 but struggled to make an impact at Camp Nou, making just 34 appearances for the Catalans.
