Martin Jol believes Bryan Ruiz’s international commitments with Costa Rica are hampering his progress at Fulham this season.

The 27-year-old is set to return to action from a hamstring injury sustained during his last run-out for his country in Monday’s Premier League clash against Newcastle United at Craven Cottage.

And Jol has admitted his concern at Ruiz’s injury problems in the wake of his recent international outings.

“This year, he [Ruiz] is much stronger than last year and every time I played him, he was one of our better players, so he’s coping with English football,” Jol told the Fulham & Hammersmith Chronicle.

“But every time he goes to Costa Rica, he comes back with an injury.

“He’s captain of his country, so he wants to play there and, of course, we have to allow him to play there, but he had two or three times this last year when he went and came back with a little problem.”

Ruiz joined Fulham from FC Twente in August 2011 in a reported £10.6m deal.
