André Villas-Boas hailed Gareth Bale as one of the world’s top players after his second-half hat-trick helped Tottenham to victory at Aston Villa on Wednesday.

The Wales winger netted the second treble of his career at Villa Park, adding to Jermain Defoe’s opener to give the north Londoners a 4-0 win in Birmingham and hoist them up to fourth place in the Premier League table.

And Villas-Boas was gushing with praise for the 23-year-old after the game, describing Bale as one of Spurs’ “major assets”.

“He is up there with the best,” said Villas-Boas. “He is showing tremendous skills and talent.

“I think he is improving every day – he is such a young player – and he is helping the team. He is one of our major assets.

“His personality is wonderful, he is going through an excellent moment of his professional and personal life, and we are benefiting from that.”
