Alastair Cook has warned England cannot afford to be complacent in the final Test against struggling India as the tourists look to secure their first series victory on the subcontinent since 1985.

Cook’s men have recovered from a disastrous start in the first Test to secure emphatic victories in Mumbai and Kolkata, moving into a 2-1 lead ahead of the Nagpur Test which starts on Thursday.

Ravi Ashwin and Sachin Tendulkar have both kept their places in India’s side despite below-par performances in the second and third Tests, although the hosts have made three changes.

Zaheer Khan, Yuvraj Singh and Harbhajan Singh have all been dropped, and with India looking to restore some pride and salvage a draw from the four-match series, Cook has warned his squad about a potential backlash.

“There is every chance it might galvanise them so complacency is not going to be in our camp,” said Cook.

“I am sure they will be coming out fighting in these next few days.”

He added: “We have got ourselves in a really good position but now we are stating a new game and everything has to start afresh,” he said.

“We have played some really good cricket but it has taken a monumental effort to do that, a lot of toughness to play in these conditions as a side.

“It has pleased me we have shown that and I have to ask the guys to do this again this week.”
