Alex Song has thanked Arsène Wenger for the “lessons” he learned at Arsenal but believes he left north London at the right time.

Song sealed a £15m move to Barcelona in a summer transfer window that also saw Robin van Persie seek pastures by joining Manchester United.

The Cameroon midfielder believes the Gunners have a similar philosophy to Barça, which has helped him settle in at Camp Nou.

“At Arsenal my time had come,” Song told RMC. “I spent seven or eight years there, for me it was time to leave.”

“It’s a shame that I left without winning [trophies]. That didn’t happen. I had to take on a new challenge.”

He continued: “I thank Arsène. What I learnt at Arsenal has helped me a lot.

“Their style is quite similar to Barcelona’s, but Barcelona are a cut above. So it hasn’t been too hard to adapt, I had good lessons at Arsenal.”
