Roberto Mancini has claimed that Manchester City’s performance in Sunday’s derby proved that his side are “better” than Manchester United, despite their 3-2 defeat at Eastlands.

The result left the defending champions six points adrift of Sir Alex Ferguson’s Premier League leaders, with City set to travel to St James’ Park to face Newcastle on Saturday.

But the Manchester City boss is refusing to be downbeat following the loss and insists there is still plenty of time to claw back the difference.

“We showed last week that we are better than Manchester United,” Mancini told a news conference on Friday.

“They do have more experience than us. They don’t have any problems when they are behind. They continue to work.

“We should do the same. It only depends on us whether we can recover these points.

“But the season is long and everything might change in February when the Champions League starts again.

“We are only six points behind and in second position.

“We don’t have a big problem. I still believe in these players and we do have a chance.”
