Shinji Kagawa is set to return to full training with Manchester United next week, manager Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed.

The Japan international has not featured for the Red Devils since he was substituted with knee injury during United’s 3-2 Champions League win over Braga at Old Trafford on 23 October.

Kagawa was initially expected to miss four or five weeks but the 23-year-old suffered a setback in his rehabilitation last month.

However, Ferguson confirmed that the midfielder, who joined United from Borussia Dortmund in the summer, is making good progress and will return to first-team training with the rest of the squad next week.

“Shinji should start training with the first team on Monday, which is good news. He’s doing very well now,” Ferguson told a news conference on Friday, before confirming that Nani and Jonny Evans would also miss Saturday’s visit of Sunderland.

“Nani is still out. Rio [Ferdinand] is OK, there’s no problem with him. We’re more or less in good shape.”

Ferguson also revealed that captain Nemanja Vidic will be included in the squad to face the Black Cats on Saturday following his lengthy lay-off after undergoing knee surgery.

“Having Vida back in the squad is a big, big one for us: his experience, his ability to head the ball, his offensive qualities are well renowned now and he’s our captain,” said Ferguson of Vidic’s return.

“Whether I start him or not, that’s another issue. But it’s great to have him back.”
