Roberto Martínez is hoping to bring in “two or three” new players during the January transfer window to bolster his Wigan Athletic squad.

The Latics currently have seven players out injured and the Spaniard, whose side travel to Newcastle United in the Premier League on Monday night, is keen to bring in reinforcements.

“The way we’ve been running our football club we always try to work in advance and we’re trying to get probably two or three players to help the ones we have got at the club to give us a real boost in January,” said Martínez.

“Remember it is a difficult window but we have been working now for a long time to identify players who can bring us something different.”

Martínez’s Wigan side can move above Newcastle into 14th place in the Premier League table with victory at St James’ Park on Monday.
