India v England: MS Dhoni says both teams were told about the "dead ball" protocol after Steve Finn was denied Suresh Raini wicket
Mahendra Singh Dhoni insisted both teams were informed about the “dead ball” protocol after Steve Finn fell foul of the rule as England slumped to five-wicket loss to India.
With match-winner Suresh Raina on 41 and India 80 from their victory target of 258, Steve Davis controversially called “dead-ball” when Finn hit the stumps in his delivery stride after the Indian batsman was caught behind.
However, Dhoni, speaking after his side’s emphatic win on Wednesday in Mohali, believes the Middlesex paceman cannot blame anyone else but himself.
“Yes, the captains were told about it,” the 31-year-old confirmed. “But the easiest thing to do is to ask Finn not to touch the stumps because that will remove all the controversy.”
“There is plenty of space to bowl from so there is no need to interfere with the stumps and if you do your side may lose because of that one particular delivery like what happened in here.”
The problem came to prominence last summer at Headingley against South Africa when batsman Graeme Smith was called back to the crease when the umpire called dead ball after the Proteas skipper was bowled, with Finn the culprit once again.
