Paul Ince is adamant his son Thomas will only leave Blackpool to join a Premier League club if the forward is guaranteed first-team football, with Liverpool reportedly close to finalising a deal.

The 20-year-old has been in impressive form this season, keeping the Tangerines’ promotion push on track with 13 goals in 23 Championship appearances.

Thomas moved to Bloomfield Park from Liverpool in 2011 after failing to break into the first-team at Anfield, but Brendan Rodgers is keen to re-sign the Reds youth graduate to add more firepower to his squad.

But the youngster’s father, who spent two seasons at Anfield, admitted he is concerned that his son’s impressive development could come to a shuddering halt if the striker is not playing on a regular basis.

“There is no point Thomas going to a Premiership club and not playing football,” Ince told Sky Sports News. “That will just stunt his development. Where he goes he will have to be involved and have the chance to get game time.

“So if you say Liverpool, you say Man United or you say Barcelona, there’s no point going to any of those clubs if he’s not going to play football. He might as well stay at Blackpool and keep playing week-in and week-out.”

Paul also remained tight-lipped about the prospect of his son rejoining the Merseyside outfit, with the former England midfielder only willing to admit Thomas is ready for the rigours of the top flight.

“Not at one time have I said he’s going to Liverpool,” Paul added. “Thomas has not at one time said he wants to leave Blackpool Football Club.

“I just feel he is ready for the Premiership – whether that means he is going to go in January, or at the end of the season, or at the end of next season, who knows.”
