Arsène Wenger conceded that Arsenal did not deserve to beat Southampton after watching his side draw at St Mary’s.

The home side took the lead when summer signing Gaston Ramirez drilled past Wojciech Szczesny in the 34th minute.

But Arsenal drew level seven minutes later when Guly do Prado inadvertently directed Theo Walcott’s free-kick into the net.

The Gunners, fresh from securing an emphatic 7-3 win over Newcastle United on Saturday, were unable to muster any real opportunities of note as they were forced to settle for a point, which moved them up to fifth place in the Premier League table.

“We were not very good offensively, we didn’t create enough,” Wenger told Sky Sports.

“Defensively, we were not too many times under threat but we didn’t create enough chances.

“We just scored seven on Saturday [against Newcastle] and I felt we lacked sharpness and desire to get into the box and create what we can do.

“Did we underestimate Southampton? I hope not. When you look at the chances we created, it’s not enough.”

“At half time I said that we have to produce more going forward and play with more purpose because we were a little bit on the back-foot. Southampton defended well today but you expect us to create more chances.

“Collectively we didn’t produce. Walcott didn’t get a lot of service today, it was not easy to play up front.”
